In A Word - Faith

by Dana Dorough

John 14:12  I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

We live in a world of instant gratification: fast foods, microwave ovens, ATM’s, emails, and so many other things that give us what we want in mere seconds – no waiting.  As I read the verse from John 14, I feel convicted.

I consider myself a person of strong faith in Christ, but as I read the last sentence of verse 12 and think of all of the amazing miracles Jesus performed, I see how short my faith falls.  “Anyone who has faith in me…will do even greater things than these…”  Are we as the Body of Christ doing greater things than Christ did?  Or do we get bored and frustrated when God doesn’t give us the fast food version of faith?  Do we walk away and never experience the power of walking in true faith – faith that is sought after and matured over time by experiences that draw us closer to God?

Sometimes we can pray over a situation and it seems like God is silent.  We accuse Him of not listening or caring, and sometimes we even get tired of waiting and try to handle the situation on our own (which never works).  I read something in the book God Chasers that really opened my eyes.  The author said that a young child loves to play hide and seek because they love to be found.  The point of the game to a very young child is not to stay hidden but to be found.  They will even call out your name or make noises just to be sure you know right where to look.  They have faith that you will love them enough to stick with the hunt until you locate them.  They have faith that you love them and want them enough to search everywhere for them.

God is like that, too.  Sometimes He hides from us just for a little while to see if we love him enough to search until we find Him – to actually come after Him for a change instead of just demanding He come to us and give us what we want instantly.  He hides from us to build our faith.  Faith means standing in and believing for an answer, even when it doesn’t come right away.  Faith means hearing the answer in your spirit before your eyes ever see it.  Faith means knowing that when God is quiet for a while, He is working things out in His time and in His way – the right time and the right way.  Faith means wanting God’s will to be your will.

If your faith is a fast food faith, where everything has to come immediately or you give up, then you have no faith at all.  When we learn to be patient and wait for the right answers, when we learn to stay still and wait on God’s timing, when we learn to trust that He truly is working things out to our good, then we will grow in faith enough as the Body of Christ to do even greater things than these, because Christ is alive and strong in us because of our faith in Him.

What is Faith to You?

For All I Trust Him

FAITH: "Stepping out on nothing and finding something there" Step of Faith by Carmen – Kera Smith

I think faith is about having hope. No matter what religion you are, if you believe in a higher power, you probably have hope that in the end you will be in a better situation. Whether that situation be going to heaven or whatever else your faith states will happen, it all boils down to having HOPE. – Leah Edwards

Faith to me is knowing that what I can’t see is more real than what I can see.  It lives in my heart. – Sarah Key

Faith is the evidence of things unseen.  It’s what leads someone to believe despite lack of evidence. – Daniel Doster

Faith is knowing God is real and He is going to come through for you, no matter what the world tries to tell you, and no matter what things look like or how impossible they seem. – Dana Dorough

Hebrews 11 says it all. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. – Josh Riles

When I think of my faith the first word that comes to mind is peace.  When I’m having a really bad day or being tempted or feeling alone and unloved I stop and pray.  I know that by taking my troubles to my heavenly Father he will take them and give me peace.  Until you feel that peace you can’t understand it or explain it but it is the most wonderful feeling in the world.  It’s like God puts his arms around you and holds you close to His heart.  And with that peace comes joy.  How can you not be joyful when you know that God is always right there for you?  You are never alone, never unloved; Satan is going to tempt you, but all you have to do is ask God to help you and He will.  I know a lot of people who don’t pray unless it is a life or death situation, but I pray about everything.  I talk to my Father about anything that makes me happy or sad; if I’m concerned about family, friends or pets, I take it to God.  All we have to do is ask, and He is there.  Sometimes other people in our lives disappoint us but He never will.  You just have to give him a chance. – Bennie Dorough

Faith is believing in God even though you don’t see him. – Emaleigh Langley

Faith is going through the day knowing that everything will be okay without having to question it because God always will be there no matter what the circumstances are. – Jerod Donuth

Faith is just believing. – Ashlie Mashburn

Faith is believing in God and that He is going to take care of you, even before you see it actually happen. – Gunnar Sanders

Faith is when you are in a tough situation but you know that no matter what happens it will be okay in the end. – James King

Faith to me means knowing that when I leave this place here on earth I will have a home in heaven with my father forever and ever. – Daphne Allen

Faith is having the peace that passes understanding even when you see no hope in your current situation. – Justin Hanners

Get Centered

Psalm 118:8 - "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man."

Are you in the center of God's word? The very center of the Bible reminds us to trust in God over trusting in ourselves or other people. The next time you consider making God the center of your life, remind yourself to go to the center of the Word. Spending time in prayer and in the Word allows you to grow closer to God and stronger in your faith. Even in the most difficult times, trusting in God is at the center of His will for our lives.
